FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
(Rye, N.H.) - White Island Lighthouse Station at the Isles of Shoals is New Hampshire’s only offshore lighthouse. It is on the National Historic Register and is in dire need of preservation. Lighthouse Kids Incorporated is a nonprofit group comprised of N.H. students, a board of directors and community supporters who are taking steps to save the historic structure - literally and figuratively.
Rye Elementary School will host a 5K LHK walkathon for its grades 3-5 on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 with a rain date of Weds., June 13. The LHK Walkathon will be held on the trails of Odiorne State Park. As long as the day
is clear, all participants will have a view of the lighthouse from the starting point by the playground at the park.
“It’s a natural collaboration for us,” said principal Suzanne Lull. “White Island is under the jurisdiction of Rye, our students study local history and our 4th-graders take a boat trip with Sue through the Isles of Shoals. All this adds up to a meaningful community service event for our school. Last year all students and staff in grades 3-5 had a successful walk and we look forward to another year."
The start will be staggered, but the first wave of walkers will begin at 9:30 a.m.
White Island Lighthouse Station is owned by the state of New Hampshire and Lighthouse Kids have partnered with the state to preserve this historic structure. It is under the jurisdiction of the town of Rye. At present, students working on the lighthouse project are from Rye Elementary School and Winnacunnet High School. The motto of Lighthouse Kids has always been, “Once a Lighthouse Kid – Always a Lighthouse Kid,” therefore, alumnae are forever considered Lighthouse Kids. Please join us! If you would like to be a participant, you may contact:
Denise Wheeler at Rye Elementary at [email protected]
or LHK founder and coordinator Sue Reynolds at [email protected].
The Lighthouse Kids Walkathon would not be possible without the support of our park host, the NH Department of Resources and Economic Development, Division of Parks and Recreation. For more information please see our Walkathon Guidelines at lighthouse kids.com
