About Us
Lighthouse KidsLighthouse Kids is a non-profit group operating as Lighthouse
Kids Incorporated, a New Hampshire 501-C(3) public charity and an affiliate
of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Lighthouse Kids are a groups of
students from Rye Junior High and Winnacunnet High School, The LHK Board
of Directors and interested members of the seacoast community and beyond!
The focus is to save New Hampshire’s only offshore lighthouse. The
first lighthouse on White Island at the Isles of Shoals was erected in
1820. The endangered tower which is on White Island today was erected
in the early 1860’s. White Island Lighthouse Station is on the National
Register of Historic Sites. Historically lighthouse keepers and the United
States Coast Guard manned the station. With someone living on the island
the lighthouse was cared for.In 1986 the lighthouse was automated, which
meant that no one needed to reside at the station. The Coast Guard left
and subsequently returned the property to the state of New Hampshire.
The Coast Guard still maintains the light as an aid to navigation, but
all structures on the island are technically the responsibility of New
Hampshire State Parks Department. Parks Department in New Hampshire typically
operates on revenue from tourists. Since White Island is remote and access
is difficult, no revenue is generated to maintain the site. Thanks mostly
to the efforts of Lighthouse Kids, White Island Lighthouse is being restored.
Also, thank you to all of the supporters who have donated money and time
to insure the success of this project.
